MoonPie Memories

My first taste of a MoonPie was a moment I’ll never forget. I was at county fair with my boyfriend, wandering around all afternoon, just people watching and enjoying each other’s company. At dusk, he suggested we try the Ferris wheel, so we got in line. The timing couldn’t have been better because by the time our swing reached the top of the arc, the sunset was a perfect picture of pink, orange and red. I’ll never forget how beautiful it looked from that height.

Knowing we’d only be stopped up there for a few moments, Ken surprised me by asking me to “pick a pocket,” suggesting that I select one of his jacket pockets. Hanging there above the fair, its lights glittering in the rapidly setting sun, I picked his left pocket. It was a MoonPie. I have to admit I was a little disappointed, but I’d never had one before.

Ken laughed. I tried a bite, and it was pretty fantastic, a taste and texture unlike any dessert I’d ever had. I was still considering the complex layers of MoonPie goodness when Ken suggested I try the other pocket. Can you guess what was in there? It was a diamond ring! I screamed and kissed Ken in the perfect moment. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier than when that Ferris wheel started back down. With a delicious MoonPie in one hand and a beautiful diamond ring on the other, tears streamed down my face, as people on the other swings on either side of us broke into applause. It was a long time ago, but it was an evening I’ll never forget. I get a little choked up just thinking about it, truth be told.

Ken and I have been married for 17 years. We have two little girls, and the whole family loves MoonPies. We always make sure to take a box or two whenever the family travels together. I can’t help it; every time I see a MoonPie, hear the name or even think of that perfect combination of graham cracker, marshmallow and chocolate, it takes me back to the happiest night of my life. Thanks for always being there, MoonPie! You’ll never go out of style.
